Social and Cultural Anthropology
University of Tübingen
Program Overview
In today's world, it has become very important to understand the social, cultural, political and economic dynamics that take place locally and globally, in order to deal with contemporary problems, such as inequalities, social and political injustice as well as environmental problems. This is where our MA programme comes in – the programme provides students with ethnographical and theoretical knowledge and trains them in qualitative methods through practical exercises. Students learn to analyse data, to develop critical thinking and gain an understanding of the needs and constraints of communities and societies. The MA programme in Social and Cultural Anthropology in Tübingen is a first-class research-oriented programme that allows students to obtain knowledge in a systematic and critical way. The curriculum includes a wide range of topics in research and teaching and encompasses theory building, methodology, practical applications and region-specific knowledge. Students become familiar with the complexity and diversity of the discipline and understand the necessary ethical aspects of anthropological work. They acquire in-depth theoretical and subject-specific knowledge of at least one particular field/region and thematic area of anthropology. They learn and apply the disciplinary methods and discuss and learn independent critical problem-solving skills in a variety of contexts. The department is specialised in visual, medical, material and organisational anthropology with a focus on applied anthropology.
