Research School for Advanced Photon Science (RS

Friedrich Schiller University Jena

Jena, Germany

Program Overview

The Research School of Advanced Photon Science (RS-APS) is the doctoral research school of the Helmholtz Institute Jena. The institute was established on the physics campus of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena in 2009, and it is a division of the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research, which is headquartered near Darmstadt. In this way, the institute connects the large-scale research facilities available at the Helmholtz Center with the established expertise of university working groups. RS-APS provides training for the next generation of scientists, working at the cutting-edge research infrastructures of today and tomorrow. RS-APS maintains a close collaboration with the Helmholtz Graduate School HGS-HIRe for FAIR (the umbrella school for PhD students at GSI) as well as the graduate school of the Abbe Center of Photonics. Our members therefore enjoy additional access to all events and courses hosted by our partners. RS-APS currently supports about 60 doctoral students in Jena, as well as in Darmstadt, Frankfurt and Hamburg. Scientific Profile: Extreme Electromagnetic Fields Warm Dense Matter Coupling of Intense Light to Matter Measurement techniques and diagnostics (x-ray optics, lasers, spectrometers, detectors, etc.)

Salary Outlook

Typical range

The stated annual salary (e.g., TV-L E13: €50,000–€65,000 for 100%) refers to a full-time position. In practice, many universities and public research institutes (such as Leibniz institutes) offer part-time contracts, commonly 50%, 65%, or 75%, and only occasionally 100%. The actual salary is therefore proportional to the contract percentage. Applicants are strongly advised to clarify the employment percentage before accepting an offer.

Fresher, mid-level, and experienced ranges are linked to external sources so they stay auditable for applicants.
