Photonics
Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau
Program Overview
The four-semester Master's programme in Photonics provides in-depth knowledge and skills in photonics and related fields in an integrated form. Photonics is an interdisciplinary field of technology that aims to utilise light in science and technology , with a focus on the quantum nature of light ( photons ). Areas of application include information and communication technology, laser material processing, medical technology, the semiconductor industry, life sciences, measurement and sensor technology, quantum technologies, artificial intelligence, aerospace, the automotive industry, mechanical and equipment engineering, and lighting and display systems. The curriculum is divided into five different areas , each consisting of a different number of modules: Mathematical and Scientific Fundamentals consists of four modules (Structure of Matter, Mathematical Methods, Theoretical Principles of Photonics I and II). Engineering Fundamentals consists of five modules (Measurement Technology and Instrumentation, Microtechnologies, Technical Optics I, Laser Technology, and Optical Measurement and Analysis Methods). Subject-specific Specialisation consists of three modules (Technical Optics II, Laser Material Processing, Applied Photonics). Profile Development consists largely of currently six elective modules (choices include Optical Simulation in Practice, Bio- and Environmental Photonics, Optics and Photonics on Large Equipment, Ophthalmic Optics, Optical Communication Technology, Applied Quantum Optics, Modelling of Optical Systems, Optical Fibres, Semiconductor Detectors, research and development projects). Interdisciplinary Content consists of one module, as business and economics subjects have been combined into a single “Management” module. The programme can be completed entirely in English . It is thus a perfect choice for international students who are interested in studying and possibly working in Germany or Europe. It is also ideal for German or European students who are preparing for an international career in the fields of information and communication technology, optoelectronics, materials processing, manufacturing technology, device technology, measurement technology, semiconductor industry, printing technologies, biotechnology and medical technology, environmental, sensor and microsystems technology, aerospace technology, or the automotive industry.
