PhD

PhD Systems Neuroscience

University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover

Hannover, Germany

Program Overview

The primary objective of the course of study is the interdisciplinary advancement of young researchers in neurosciences. In the rapidly changing field of neurobiology, the danger of premature specialisation of young scientists and the loss of an interdisciplinary approach is particularly acute, and they must receive solid training in general neurobiology. For this reason, the curriculum must be broad in both content and methodology in order to acquaint students with the many aspects of systems neuroscience, while the emphasis must remain specifically on basic knowledge. Excessively specialised coursework should be avoided, so that classes are of interest to all students. The linkage of theoretical and clinical sciences is to be achieved in courses taught jointly by professors from theoretical and clinical disciplines. The training course is designed to allow students to set up an individualised course of study from the catalogue of required and elective courses on offer. Of particular importance are the interdisciplinary nature of the programme and the integration of basic and applied neurosciences, as reflected in the variety of disciplines represented by members of the ZSN (Zentrum für Systemische Neurowissenschaften - Center for Systems Neuroscience). Courses covering the following subjects are offered: Basics of cellular and molecular neuroscience Sensory systems (auditory, olfactory, and visual) Cognitive and behavioural systems Limbic systems Motor systems Systems neuroscience: clinical applications Plus: basics of biometrics, biophysics, animal welfare, etc.

Salary Outlook

Typical range

The stated annual salary (e.g., TV-L E13: €50,000–€65,000 for 100%) refers to a full-time position. In practice, many universities and public research institutes (such as Leibniz institutes) offer part-time contracts, commonly 50%, 65%, or 75%, and only occasionally 100%. The actual salary is therefore proportional to the contract percentage. Applicants are strongly advised to clarify the employment percentage before accepting an offer.

Fresher, mid-level, and experienced ranges are linked to external sources so they stay auditable for applicants.

Academic Admission

Applicants for the PhD programme must have successfully completed a university degree in veterinary medicine, medicine, dental medicine (state examination or Master's degree), biology, biochemistry, chemistry or in another field of the natural sciences (diploma, Master's degree). A corresponding degree from a non-German university in the above fields can be recognised by the PhD Commission as equivalent to a German degree. Successful completion of the first part of a Master's programme at one of the member establishments of the ZSN in Hannover can also be recognised by the PhD Commission as qualification for admittance to the programme if the student has shown outstanding performance in this part of the course and has been recommended by the Master's programme commission in question. All applicants must provide evidence of outstanding academic achievement. The curriculum vitae must indicate the applicant's exceptional ability and motivation. The PhD Commission determines applicants' suitability for admission.
