Master of Science in Mathematics

Mathematics in Kassel is mainly application and computer oriented . The Institute of Mathematics specialises in analysis , computer algebra , optimisation , discrete mathematics , stochastics and numerics , and our students choose the majority of their courses from these fields. Typical subjects are functional analysis and partial differential equations, variational calculus and mathematical physics, computational commutative or differential algebra, cryptography and coding theory, discrete optimisation, discrete mathematics and combinatorics, numerical analysis of ordinary or partial differential equations, stochastic modelling and simulation or stochastic processes. Besides mathematics, all students must choose a minor subject which can be physics , computer science , nanoscience or economics . About one-fifth of the courses will be from this minor subject, which encourages interdisciplinarity among our students. The possible courses usually cover topics for which mathematical methods are relevant. Studying mathematics in Kassel is characterised by great freedom: there are no compulsory mathematics courses — instead, students can freely choose each semester among the offered Master's courses and seminars. Six months are dedicated to writing a Master's thesis on the results of a student research project . Another characteristic of mathematics in Kassel is the close contact between students, lecturers and tutors. All courses are taught in small classes and accompanied by tutorials.
