PhD

Doctoral Programme Clinical Pharmacy

Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich

München, Germany

Program Overview

Modern pharmacotherapy is an essential cornerstone of medical treatment. A large portion of all hospital patients suffer from multiple diseases and are already undergoing a complex drug therapy at the time of admission. For the most successful therapy, choice of medications has to be tailored, and all safety aspects associated with the drug therapy have to be taken into account. The focus of the doctoral programme in Clinical Pharmacy is to increase and ensure drug safety. This is achieved by joining the disciplines of pharmacy and medicine as well as cooperating with specialists within epidemiology, public health, and healthcare research. Different aspects of drug safety, i.e., individual dose adjustment, drug-drug interactions, and adverse drug events (ADE) as well as personalised medicine, are topics that are pursued in cooperation with different and specific medical disciplines. The projects are mentored by teams consisting of a scientist and pharmacists as well as clinicians. If applicable, at the beginning of the project, every new doctoral student is trained within the drug information unit of the hospital pharmacy and is then introduced to the clinical situation on the respective hospital ward. Additional support is offered by the GraduateCenter.

Salary Outlook

Typical range

The stated annual salary (e.g., TV-L E13: €50,000–€65,000 for 100%) refers to a full-time position. In practice, many universities and public research institutes (such as Leibniz institutes) offer part-time contracts, commonly 50%, 65%, or 75%, and only occasionally 100%. The actual salary is therefore proportional to the contract percentage. Applicants are strongly advised to clarify the employment percentage before accepting an offer.

Fresher, mid-level, and experienced ranges are linked to external sources so they stay auditable for applicants.
