Do you want to combine Chinese Studies with a specialisation in a further subject? Then the MA Chinese Studies with an Optional Focus is the right degree programme for you! The Institute for Chinese Studies in Erlangen offers an informed view of Chinese history and literature, global history, history of science and technology, as well as the history of cultural exchange between Chinese-speaking countries and the West. The institute is defined by a wide range of research fields and class topics in cooperation with other disciplines at FAU as well as national and international partners. This enables a differentiated and reflected understanding of Chinese-speaking countries in the past and today. Chinese Studies with an Optional Focus (MA) is a unique, interdisciplinary degree programme that combines Chinese studies with a specialisation. The programme integrates an in-depth education in Chinese Studies with acquiring fundamental knowledge in one of several subjects: English and American Studies, History, Sinology, Economics, or Political Science. Students can choose one specialisation. Chinese Studies with an Optional Focus is a research-oriented degree programme that emphasises interdisciplinary approaches to academic work. An essential part of the programme is intensive Chinese language classes, including the academic translation of Chinese texts. The teaching language is English.

English (at least level C1 according to the CEFR) Good knowledge of Modern Standard Chinese When choosing a focus which is taught in German, a minimum level of B2 according to the CEFR in German is required. If you choose a focus entirely taught in English (Sinology, English and American Studies, etc.), knowledge of German is not required. However, learning some German for daily life and a better understanding of your host country is still helpful.

Academic Admission
A degree in Chinese Studies of at least 70 ECTS or a related degree comprising China-related courses of at least 60 ECTS (at least 20 ECTS of which for academic subjects) In both cases a minimum final grade of 3.0 is required. In some cases, students may have to pass a qualification assessment examination. Letter of motivation
APS Certificate
An APS certificate is required for applicants who have completed their qualifying education in India, China, or Vietnam.
