Masters

Applied Geosciences – Geoengineering (GIN)

RWTH Aachen University

Aachen, Germany

Program Overview

Our MSc programme Applied Geosciences is offered in five streams: Applied Mineralogy and Crystallography (AMC) Computational Geology & Geophysics (CGG) Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) Field-based Geosciences (FBG) Geoengineering (GIN) Geoengineering (GIN) Geoengineering deals with important topics for the future, and RWTH Aachen University is one of the few universities in Germany that offers the portfolio of geoengineering in research and teaching. Is it possible to develop geothermal reservoirs for future heat and energy supply without triggering major earthquakes? What answers do we have to increased landslides, which can destroy entire settlements, with dwindling permafrost due to climate change? How can we protect groundwater, which is the world's most important resource for our daily water supply, for the future of us all and tap into new reserves to meet the ever-increasing demand? What methods are available to us to remove underground pollutants in urban areas and help shape a city worth living in? Geoengineering at RWTH Aachen University combines engineering geology, hydrogeology and applied geophysics and prepares you to develop and provide answers to these and similar questions in a lively professional and research environment. A compulsory section contains all the courses needed to understand the deformation of rock at dam sites and in underground construction (caverns, tunnels, geothermal boreholes) and to enable the exploration using geophysical methods. PC courses teach the ability to process environmental and climate data. A wide range of profile areas offers further individual specialisation. This includes geophysical methods, geothermal topics and modern data processing methods such as machine learning and AI. Hands-on learning is implemented in laboratory and field courses as well as the wide range of courses on groundwater modelling. You can also contribute skills acquired during a semester abroad, for example. We are one of the few German universities to offer specialisations in soil and groundwater remediation and water well drilling and development, in which courses are also taught by practitioners. Due to the professional focus, some modules are only offered in German. All compulsory courses are taught in English and the specialisation can be taken in English throughout. We don't just talk about professional orientation and practical relevance; we put it into practice. Be part of it.
