International Max Planck Research School – Moduli Spaces and their Applications in Algebra, Differential Geometry, Topology and Mathematical Physics Moduli Spaces (IMPRS)

Max Planck Institute for Mathematics

Bonn, Germany

Program Overview

The International Max Planck Research School on Moduli Spaces (IMPRS) is the graduate programme of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn (MPIM) jointly offered with the University of Bonn. It is part of the Bonn International Graduate School in Mathematics (BIGS-Mathematics). The IMPRS is sponsored by the Max Planck Society. The academic training programme of the IMPRS Moduli Spaces consists of courses, mini-courses, seminars and lecture series adapted to the needs of IMPRS fellows, complementing the PhD programme of the University of Bonn. PhD positions are available in the direction of moduli spaces and related fields for candidates with excellent Master's or Bachelor's degrees in the areas of research advised by one of the MPIM directors: Arithmetic Geometry (Scholze) Geometric Langlands Theory (Gaitsgory) Topology (Teichner) Further research directions are available with other IMPRS board members and with other faculty at MPIM, such as Number Theory (Blomer, Harder, Moree), Arithmetic Geometry (Faltings, Juan Esteban Rodríguez Camargo), Modular Forms (Zagier), Teichmueller Theory (Hamenstaedt), Complex Algebraic Geometry (Huybrechts), Global Analysis (Mueller), Topology (Barthel, Bottman, Ozornova, Schwede), Geometric Topology (Avramidi, Stadler), Representation Theory (Stroppel) and Mathematical Physics (Klemm, Blohmann). In addition, faculty members at the University of Bonn can also serve as advisers. The PhD should be finished within three to four years. The programme is in English, and the dissertation and dissertation defence can also be in English, if desired. In exceptional cases, continuous supervision or graduating from the student's home university is possible.

Salary Outlook

Typical range

The stated annual salary (e.g., TV-L E13: €50,000–€65,000 for 100%) refers to a full-time position. In practice, many universities and public research institutes (such as Leibniz institutes) offer part-time contracts, commonly 50%, 65%, or 75%, and only occasionally 100%. The actual salary is therefore proportional to the contract percentage. Applicants are strongly advised to clarify the employment percentage before accepting an offer.

Fresher, mid-level, and experienced ranges are linked to external sources so they stay auditable for applicants.
